Winston Peters

Summary

YOUR editorial (March 1) is critical of the content of Winston Peters' recent speech on the media. He suggested that the success of Don Brash's first Orewa speech was due to exceptionally heavy media attention in the month following its delivery. However, he gave more emphasis to the publication of 96 articles on Don Brash's second Orewa speech in the eight weeks before the speech was delivered. It is not surprising that he was put out by this.

Nevertheless, your editorial states, "Dr Brash, as head of the second-biggest party in Parliament, is the prime-minister in waiting. So what he has to say is inevitably of media interest." Yes, what he has to say should be of interest, but should we be interested in what journalists, before the event, think he might have to say? It is all very well to criticise Winston Peters for what he says, but to misrepresent what he says, and then criticise him, is just giving evidence that the media may not be acting responsibly.
