Burgundy goes south
EVEN though it can be delicious, pinot noir tends to get overlooked by supermarket wine drinkers. It's at its most glorious in Burgundy's classic elegant, complex reds - but frankly, unless you're prepared to spend at least Pounds 10 a bottle, red Burgundy can often be disappointing. Meanwhile, the choice of pinot noirs from elsewhere is not huge: it's a tricky grape to grow, needing cooler conditions than many parts of the New World can offer.
