THIS is the week when business leaders gather for their annual orgy of mutual backslapping and recognition, otherwise known as the CBI conference.

Doubtless, plenty of references will be made to "captains of industry" being in attendance. Well, if they're the captains, save me a place in the lifeboat. Not only will the room be full of self- important committee men (there won't be many women) but the records of the organisation's recent big wheels hardly inspire confidence.
