LAST Saturday's Independent went totally tabloid and immediately enjoyed a 17 per cent lift in sales, according to early trade estimates, taking it to a healthy 282,000. For the first four weeks of 2004, the Indy is now up more than 13 per cent year-onyear, a better performance than the same tabloid experiment at The Times, which last month was still down around 1.5 per cent on January 2003.
The Indy's success will encourage it to go entirely tabloid - and incentivise The Times to roll out its tabloid edition to the rest of the country. But The Guardian still dithers, even though it is selling 26,000 fewer copies than it did a year ago.See the full content of this document
