IT WAS fascinating to read that a London deputy mayor, Kit Malthouse, thinks he is very influential with the Met Police, because that's not how many others see it. A modern police service needs to be accountable to the people it serves and in London, that means the Met Police Authority. The London Mayor chairs the authority, but key decisions are made by a mixture of cross-party consensus and independent-minded individuals. Boris does not have a guaranteed majority on the MPA, which means he can't always get his own way.
