FEARS that benign weather would turn the 134th Open Championship into a shooting gallery for birdie hunters were soon dispelled at St Andrews today.

Mark Calcavecchia, the third player away out of 156 starters in golf 's most historic and prestigious tournament, claimed the first birdie of the championship when he sunk a six-foot putt for a three at the opening hole.
