SEMI-grounded at the waters edge, the Zapcat looks innocu-ous. It is a simple craft, con-siof two inflatable tubes either side of a rigid, central platform. The only clues as to what it might be capable of are the wing at the front and the outboard motor at the back.

Stepping aboard this seemingly flimsy craft, I was mostly aware of the effort expended in getting into the obligatory dry suit. This involved much tugging and a certain degree of contor-tioniSealed by rubber at the neck, wrists and feet, I was protected from the elements. It turned out that this was an effort worth expending. It was a grey morning in Southampton and rain was in the air. I had been thoroughly briefed by my pilot Craig Davis. The gist of his advice was to keep one foot braced in a strap, the other tucked out of the way, and both hands on any piece of rope in the vicinity.
