A DISAPPOINTING air of downlift and lack of occasion marked the first night of Gregory Doran's insipid, swansong production of Coriolanus. It is the last play in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre before it closes for three years of redevelopment after more than seven decades of famous existence. The evening missed even a whisper of celebratory nostalgia for the company's glorious past or the lost stars and directors of the Fifties who gave this theatre its modern identity.

Coriolanus, an extraordinary political problem play shot through with pessimism about the eternal conf lict between rulers and ruled, may owe its inspiration to the brutally suppressed peasant riots of 1607.
