Summary


THE PRIME MINISTER yesterday sought to deflect attention from protests over fuel duty and car tax to the prospects for nuclear power. Nuclear energy creates few carbon emissions once the plants have been built, and should be cheaper than that from oil, even though, as it emerged today, the costs of handling waste will be higher than initially thought.

However, the industry has been made to wait far too long for the decisions it needs if new power stations are to replace the ageing reactors on which Britain relies for 20 per cent of its electricity. On Tuesday, simultaneous problems at a number of plants caused power cuts for around 500,000 people, highlighting the risks in store if generating capacity is insufficient.
