SOME AUTHORS are too prolific for their own good. Joyce Carol Oates has just published her 36th novel, which is more than 600 pages long (that's not including her 30 collections of short stories, eight volumes of poetry, seven plays and 12 books of essays and reviews).

She must be single-handedly responsible for the destruction of a small chunk of the Amazon forest.
