VODAFONE'S customer base climbed above 200 million this week as it continued to seek to add another 20 million customers by taking over India's Hutchison Essar for up to $20 billion (Pounds 10.3 billion).

Chief executive Arun Sarin said: "It took us 15 years up to 1999 to get our first 100 million customers, five years to get the next 100 million, and now the big question is how long it will take to achieve the next 100 million."
