AMID the train chaos of last week it was almost possible to feel sorry for Virgin Trains. There it was, the great innocent, thwarted in its desire to serve the public by the hopeless incompetents of Network Rail.

Don't be fooled: while the train operator is very adept at PR (as might be expected of any business controlled by Sir Richard Branson), its own house leaves much to be desired.
