Summary
YOU report on local councillors' proposals to crack down on cannabis use in Camden Town, where I practise as a criminal lawyer, by using antisocial behaviour orders to ban persistent users from the area (27 January).
This will achieve nothing more than driving them to other areas. The remainder caught will be casual users, mostly youngsters, including tourists and students. Many of these people, of otherwise good character, will have to go to court and could end up with a criminal record - even for a first-time offence of possession of a small quantity for personal use. This is in contrast to Association of Chief Police Officers' guidelines, which suggest that cautions are more appropriate.See the full content of this document
