. THE VATICAN is to increase security to prevent international spies from listening in on cardinals as they decide on a successor to Pope John Paul II.
All 115 cardinals eligible to vote will be frisked by guards and buildings will be scanned for electronic devices to prevent the discussions becoming known to the outside world. After a morning mass at St Peter's on Monday, the cardinals will travel on buses with blacked-out windows to begin their deliberations beneath Michaelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. The Washington Post newspaper has published the latest betting on contenders to be the next Pope and listed Father Dougal Maguire of Craggy Island, Ireland, as a 1,000-1 long shot.
