WHEN you are eight months pregnant, the last thing you want to do is spend the evening with London's glamorous set at a champagnefuelled party. A sofa and a packet of biscuits might be more suitable companions. But Phoebe Philo showed out with the best of them at last night's British Fashion Awards where she was named designer of the year.

Looking lovely in an empire-line black sequin dress, the 31-year- old designer for Chloe beat Burberry's Christopher Bailey and designer Roland Mouret to take the top accolade of the evening. And well deserved it was: since being appointed at Chloe, Philo has transformed the fusty French brand into a sexy, sassy label with a high-profile fan base of models, actresses and everyday women who cannot get enough of her look. "It's a real honour to win this award, and a very unexpected surprise," said Philo, who was accompanied by her husband, art curator Max Wigram, as well as her mother.
