THE Bank of England today voted to freeze interest rates but its European counterpart pushed up the cost of borrowing to its highest level in five years.

Interest rates on the Continent are now 3.5%, still far lower than Britain's 5% or the 5.25% of the US, but economists now believe the European Central Bank will vote to increase rates further.
