RUPERT MURDOCH looks close to taking control of the Wall Street Journal in a $5 billion (Pounds 2.5 billion) deal that will spark a storm of protest from journalists and political opponents of the media mogul.

In a surprise U-turn the Bancroft family, which holds most of the voting shares in the Journal's parent company Dow Jones, today agreed to meet the News Corporation chairman. Murdoch has wanted to buy what is arguably America's most important newspaper for decades, suddenly bidding $60 a share for the company last month.
