Instead of a tawdry oil deal, the release of Abdelbaset Ali al- Megrahi was part of a noble international endeavour to make allies out of rogue states and to rein in weapons of mass destruction. There was "no cover-up, no double dealing" and commercial interests were nothing compared to the wider imperative of bringing Libya into the fold.
