THE Government was today set to announce that almost 1,000 extra British troops are to be sent to Afghanistan, taking the total there to 9,200.
The deployment -- to be announced days after Gordon Brown visited Afghanistan and Pakistan -- is far smaller than that privately requested by Barack Obama to support US forces, and about half the number military chiefs said they could provide.See the full content of this document
