THEY pretended it was business as usual with the Boots halftime figures this morning, but nobody was fooled. Since the company announced its life-changing proposal to merge with Alliance UniChem, everything's been highly unusual, as both sides have tried every remedy they can think of to cure the market of its scepticism about the deal.

Four weeks on, they've failed, as the price charts here show. Boots' shares have caught a cold while Alliance's have influenza. It's probably not H5N1, but it certainly suggests that a period in quarantine would be sensible. A big, controversial merger threatens to make the disease worse.
