IF your train was delayed in London last night you'll know who to blame, as all the railway bigwigs in the capital seemed to have left their stations for my colleague Christian Wolmar's launch party for Blood, Iron and Gold: How the Railways Transformed the World at Daunt Books in Marylebone.
Publisher Toby Mundy told assembled trainspotters, including former Mayor Ken Livingstone, Peter Hendy and Francis Wheen that it is "a stupendous book, the perfect Christmas present -buy early and buy often." Transport minister Lord Adonis praised Wolmar's work from the gallery: "I knew that the first Minister - indeed the first person to be killed by a train -was William Huskisson but I hadn't realised how close Bismarck came. Christian also tells how Tsar Nicholas II was instrumental in the planning of the Trans-Siberian railway - which you had to have a passport to board."See the full content of this document
