REED ELSEVIER was among the worst-performing blue-chips today as its shares slumped 231/2p to 577p, having briefly touched 564p, after a disappointing trading update.

Educational publishing has been a growth market in the UK and US but there are signs that it may have run into strong headwinds. President Bush has spent large sums on education in the US, and that has been good news for the likes of Reed and its main rival, Pearson.
