FORMER environment secretary John Gummer correctly observes that parties which don't take climate change seriously won't be taken seriously by the electorate - polls show the public are streets ahead of most politicians on this issue (12 March). He is also right to criticise the Government's lamentable climate-change record. But he is wrong to think the Tories offer any alternative.

Many of their specific policies are still on the drawing board, but those we know about suggest support for roadbuilding, waste incineration, nuclear power, tax cuts for multinationals and opposition to EU environment initiatives.
