HIGH STREET bellwether John Lewis reports its weekly sales figures. Sales at the department stores group tumbled almost 10% last week as the grim weather and poor economic outlook stopped shoppers parting with their cash.

The dire figures made analysts dismiss the previous week's fairly solid numbers when sales fell 1.3% as a blip, and warned that it heralds a grim Christmas for retailers. Sales at the group's upmarket supermarkets chain Waitrose remained strong, rising 0.6%.
