THE tit-for-tat battle between the City and Canary Wharf for big- name banking tenants stepped up a gear today as JPMorgan finally signed up for a massive new European HQ at the Wharf.

The City of London had been fighting hard to keep JPMorgan in the Square Mile, where it had originally opted for a millionsquare-foot development by Hammerson between London Wall and Fore Street. Now the bank has paid [pounds]237 million for a plot of land at the western edge of Canary Wharf for a giant new development, sketched above. Analysts say almost two million square feet of office space in the Docklands area is in danger of being deserted because of bank mergers and the credit crunch.
