SHEIKH Riyadh ul Haq, the man tipped to take over the most influential Muslim seminary in Britain, has been revealed as an extremist who is openly contemptuous of Christians, Jews and Hindus. Mr ul Haq supports armed jihad and is explicitly opposed to integration and cohesion at a time when better integration is being advocated as the most widely accepted cure for Muslim extremism. The sect to which he belongs, the Deobandis, not only controls more than half the mosques in Britain but has also been linked to Tablighi Jamaat, the group applying to build Europes largest mosque in east London. Two of the 7/ 7 bombers worshipped at Jamaat mosques.

At a time when the east London mosque is seeking planning permission, the new disclosures about Mr ul Haq demonstrate that the exact nature of Deobandi and Jamaat views needs to be understood and confronted. There is growing opposition to the plans from moderate Muslims as well as other groups in Newham who fear that the proposed Jamaat mosque could turn their area into a monoculture and attract extremists.
