SO farewell, Department of Trade and Industry. Nobody liked you anyway. And hello, Department of Business and Enterprise. Am I alone in being cynical about Gordon's early moves? I'm happy to be proved wrong, but for the life of me I can't get excited about what is occurring. John Hutton is a decent politician but has zilch experience of commerce. The best Trade Secretaries in recent times were Lord Young and Michael Heseltine. Both came from business and had a feel for the commercial world, its concerns and needs.

The new Prime Minister has also moved swiftly to set up a business advisory council. This has a familiar ring to it we already have the International Business Advisory Council, established by Brown the Chancellor. Confused? Probably not as much as Sir Terry Leahy who now finds himself sitting on them both (assuming IBAC continues to function).
