SO farewell, Department of Trade and Industry. Nobody liked you anyway. And hello, Department of Business and Enterprise. Am I alone in being cynical about Gordon's early moves? I'm happy to be proved wrong, but for the life of me I can't get excited about what is occurring. John Hutton is a decent politician but has zilch experience of commerce. The best Trade Secretaries in recent times were Lord Young and Michael Heseltine. Both came from business and had a feel for the commercial world, its concerns and needs.
The new Prime Minister has also moved swiftly to set up a business advisory council. This has a familiar ring to it we already have the International Business Advisory Council, established by Brown the Chancellor. Confused?
