THERE'S a troubling message behind the fuss about Susan Boyle; for the flurry she has caused is not so much about her voice as her looks. She sings beautifully, but then so do many people who win television talent contests.
The unusual thing about her is that, while most contestants are young and pretty, she is middleaged and ugly.
