A NEW 50-pence piece, celebrating the 250th anniversary of Samuel Johnson's dictionary, is being designed for release next year. Johnson started work on the first English dictionary in 1746, and was convinced he could finish the job in three years.
When his friend Dr William Adams pointed out that it had taken the French Academy's 40 members 40 years to compile the French dictionary, Johnson was said to have replied: "Let me see; 40 times 40 is 1,600. As three to 1,600, so is the proportion of an Englishman to a Frenchman." Nine years later the dictionary was published.See the full content of this document
