Summary
THE Prime Minister announced in his conference speech that he would be travelling to the US and European capitals over the next few weeks to help organise reform of the global financial system. It was an inspiring promise, which cast Gordon Brown in the light of world statesman as well as party leader; indeed, he flew straight to New York from Manchester to attend a UN conference on global poverty.
Unfortunately, the US Treasury Secretary, Henry Paulson, is too busy to see the Prime Minister right now. He is engaged in trying to salvage his $700 billion bail-out for American banks which looks increasingly likely to undergo a radical overhaul in Congress.See the full content of this document
