SATURDAY CHOICE The Romantics 8pm, BBC2 HOLD ON - I thought there was a rule that all history documentaries had to include useless acting in their dramatic reconstructions. Peter Ackroyd's new series about the Romantic poets plainly breaks this convention, as it features thesp talents such as David Threlfall, David Tennant and Dudley Sutton.

The Romantic poets of the late 18th century not only wrote famous verse but changed the way we thought about our existence. Ackroyd's series looks at their ideas both in the social contexts of the time - French philosopher Denis Diderot, for example, was actually arrested for "thinking differently" - and against modern backdrops.
