IN VIEW of Work and Pensions Secretary John Hutton's comments on unemployment this week, readers might be interested to hear my recent experiences of a government-funded training scheme.

I was signed up for a 13-week placement funded by the taxpayer at a cost of around Pounds 1,400. But after two weeks of "job search", the training provider had no placement to offer me, so I spent the time in their offices looking at newspapers and trade journals.

The Job Training Farce

In the same room were a group of disaffected, bored and angry youngsters who were on another training programme called Gateway to Work - a farce involving three weeks of playing computer games, for which the taxpayer pays Pounds 345 per week. When people attend either of these courses they receive Pounds 15 extra on their benefit.
