SERIOUS tensions at the heart of 10 Downing Street were exposed today in the wake of the resignation of one of Gordon Brown's chief aides.

Spencer Livermore walked out last night after a decade as one of the Prime Minister's closest supporters, despite attempts by members of the Brown inner circle including Cabinet minister Ed Balls to persuade him to stay on.
