Summary
NOW that smokers who drop their fag butts are facing zero tolerance in one London council area (23 February), do local authorities have plans to treat gum-chewers in the same way? The street outside Pimlico Academy round the corner from me is carpeted with the stuff. From time to time council employees come out with machines blasting out high-powered jets of water, which must be hugely costly in terms of energy and manpower -- far more so than picking up a few butts. Will we be seeing schoolchildren fined Pounds 80 per gob any time soon? J Pickles, SW1.
I AM a smoker and don't like to make a mess, but I am not going to throw a smouldering fag butt into a bin full of flammable material. We need ashtray bins -- with covers, so they don't fill with water and then empty all over the floor. Put enough ashtray bins outside offices and stations where people congregate and then if smokers don't use them, fine them as you would any other litter bug.See the full content of this document
