MOTORISTS are four times more likely to have a serious crash if they use a mobile phone - and hands-free devices are no safer, a study shows.

The study, of 456 drivers who had been involved in road crashes requiring hospital treatment, found mobile phone use in the 10 minutes before a collision was linked with a fourfold increased likelihood of crashing.
