. NINETEEN police officers were killed when their convoy was attacked in southern Afghanistan by suspected Taliban rebels.
The convoy of 150 police was attacked last night while driving on a dirt road beside a mountain in Helmand province. Dozens of insurgents opened fire on the convoy, sparking a gun battle that lasted until early today, when the militants fled into the mountains. Among the 19 dead was Helmand's deputy police chief. Four police officers were wounded and four police vehicles destroyed. Security forces sent reinforcements into the area and secured the region. Interior ministry official Dad Mohammed Rasa called the attack "the deadliest ever on the police".See the full content of this document
