ABOUT an hour after the end of the Carling Cup final, a group of journalists waiting to conduct post - match interviews were astonished to see John Terry, still in his Chelsea kit and with his ankle brace in full view, being ushered stage right into the stadium to rejoin his team-mates.

If there was a moment of collective astonishment - and blessed relief from the assembled media crew, it was that. Along with the 70,000 at the Millennium Stadium, who had been quite fearing the worst after seeing him in a neck brace and oxygen mask being carted off the pitch on a stretcher, it seemed impossible to believe that he could be back at the venue so swiftly after the nightmarish knockout by Abou Diaby.
