WHAT a ridiculous and toxic miasma obscures the current debate on smoking. Yesterday, the Government flashed and burned its earlier proposals for a ban. Apparently the prohibitionists - Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt and her ally Tessa Jowell - were smoked out by "Doc" John Reid and Jack "Man of" Straw, who engineered a compromise allowing for " smoking pubs" that don't serve food.
Some cynics suggest that Reid - an ex-health secretary himself - wanted the issue fudged because he was worried Labour would lose working-class votes with a ban.See the full content of this document
