Summary

STRATFORD, in the east London borough of Newham, is one of the capital's most deprived neighbourhoods and yet there is a sense of optimism in the air. It is the major beneficiary of the decision to stage the 2012 Olympics in London. From 2007, when the final section of the Channel Tunnel high-speed rail link opens, Stratford International station will be Eurostar's last stop before St Pancras and the area will become a gateway to Europe. And from 2009, when domestic trains start using the high-speed line, Stratford commuters will be only seven minutes from central London.
