THE spoon is one of man's oldest implements, with a rich social and design history, so when I joined a group of novice silversmiths at the Leathermarket Workshop of designer craftsmen Howard Fenn and Steve Wager to learn to make my own spoon it was a daunting experience.

I was not persuaded that a one-day course would ever allow me to get a thickish piece of silver sheet to end up as a spoon.
