Summary
You applaud the Tories' idea of stars like Paul McCartney and the Stones performing at the 2012 Cultural olympiad alongside young talent as a boon for the older music fan (21 october). Really? Ageing uS jazz and blues stars got it right, slouching onstage in fedoras and shabby suits. Hard living often made them look older than they were. By contrast, sixtysomething British rockers are pathetically keen to pretend they are younger, with dyed hair and cringeworthy attempts to adopt youth style. That's fine at their own retro gigs but spare us these Peter Pans as flag-bearers for British culture. (And please, no rock at the Palace for the Diamond Jubilee; these dinosaurs are an embarrassment to the Queen).
