I'M A holiday snob - and I blame the parents. When I was growing up, everyone else's families flew off to Florida or the Algarve, while my parents (both teachers) packed up the battered old Renault and dragged me and my brother around the Catholic churches and museums of middle Europe to improve our young minds.

That sort of thing rubs off on you. After GCSEs, my schoolfriends went on a boozefilled fortnight to Newquay; I went backpacking in Thailand and Malaysia amazing temples). As an adult, I've never been on a package holiday, and the very idea of travelling anywhere with a load of other Brits all speaking English to each other brings me out in supercilious hives.
