THE mother I phoned in the vain hope that her son could come and play with mine had every reason to sound smug that we remain in Shepherd's Bush while she frolics in an East Anglian beach hut, wearing old-fashioned stripy swimwear. But it wasn't the smugness alone that made me want to bash her about the head with a Cath Kidston beach bag. There was a competitive tone in her voice when she asked: "What on earth are you finding to do with yourselves in London, you poor loves?"
