ISRAELI soldiers exchanged fire with Palestinian gunmen at a Bethlehem mental hospital before dawn today. The 60-minute shootout started after troops went in to arrest militants believed to be behind recent suicide bombings, commanders said.

The army then arrested 12 Palestinians before withdrawing from the town.
