ROYAL DUTCH SHELL today reported a 70% slump in profits as it became the latest oil producer to be hit by the global recession.

Second-quarter profits crashed to just $2.34 billion (Pounds 1.4 billion) from $7.9 billion last year as weak demand dragged down oil prices.
