MARIA SHARAPOVA came perilously close to making tennis history for all the wrong reasons today when she struggled against injury and searing heat to beat France's Camille Pin 6-3, 4-6, 9-7.

Pin served for the match at 7-6 in the deciding set, only for her game to fall apart and the chance to make Sharapova the first top seed ever to lose in the opening round of the Australian Open disappeared.
