Summary
IN A tribute to Sir John Betjeman's wide friendships, a disparate mob gathered at St Mary le Strand, which the late Poet Laureate had helped to save, to mark the publication of the engrossingly hefty third volume of Bevis Hillier's authorised Betjeman biography. Partygoers including Barry Humphries and Mary Wilson were treated to a speech by Hillier in which he recalled Betjeman's wry humour. Hillier used to live at a flat nearby with an old foundation stone which read: "... was laid by the Poet Laureate."
On seeing this, Betjeman immediately chortled: "Every nice girl's ambition!"See the full content of this document
