Summary
MUCH has been made of the apparent olive branch being handed to New Zealand by the United States administration in "allowing" New Zealand Defence forces to take part in joint military exercises occurring off the coast of Singapore this week, but the first of many question must be, what is the motivation for the decision.
In the first instance though, it is somewhat misleading to say New Zealand has been allowed to take part, alongside the Americans. The exercise is a multinational one, involving defence forces from Australia, Japan and Britain, as well as New Zealand and the US, so the suggestion that New Zealand forces been given approval by the US to take part is questionable. What has happened, it appears, is that the US administration has given its own forces a dispensation to exercise alongside New Zealand forces.
