Summary
RESTRICTED BY a new hip replacement, historian Paul Johnson paid tribute over the weekend to his wife Marigold for seeing off an intruder in their Bayswater home with a foldaway stool. "I've never seen such a frightened man," Johnson observed of the hapless raider. "I said, 'Now you know what I have to put up with all the time'... clearly the thief didn't realise she was a former head girl of Benenden."
It is not the first time the Johnson house has played host to strange encounters. In 1992 the American journalist Richard Stengel described in SPY magazine a memorable episode with Johnson during which the Modern Times author disappeared from his own abode halfway through the interview. "After half an hour I put on my coat," Stengel wrote. "I walked out into the hall, called out 'Goodbye!' and then shut the front door behind me."See the full content of this document
