MOST gardeners, even those with just a small patio or window box, grow a few herbs for the kitchen. A year-round supply of rosemary, sage and thyme are just three culinary must-haves that are at their most aromatic when freshly picked. But if you grow herbs just for harvesting, you are missing their point, and much of their pleasure.
"Herbs have great beauty, enduring appeal and a fascinating history. They are also easy to grow, accessible, relatively inexpensive and lowmaintenance," says landscape designer George Carter, who uses them not as alsoran plants, but as multifunctional garden stars.
